미국은 3일(현지시간) 베네수엘라에서 비밀 군사작전을 개시해 안전가옥에 있던 니콜라스 마두로(Nicolas Maduro) 베네수엘라 대통령을 마약 밀매 혐의 등으로 검거해 미국 뉴욕으로 압송했다.

 

아내와 함께 현직 대통령이 체포된건 1990년 1월 마누엘 노리에가 파나마 대통령 이후 35년 만의 국제적 초대형 사건으로 세계를 놀라게 했다.

 

이번 미국의 ‘확고한 결의(Absolute Resolve)’ 군사작전은 미 법무부가 2020년부터 마약 밀매 혐의로 마두로 대통령을 기소해 뉴욕 맨해튼 남부연방법원에서 진행 중인 것을 법적 근거로 실시한 것으로 공식 발표가 나왔다.

 

미국 트럼프 대통령은 베네수엘라를 당분간 미국이 통제할 것으로 밝혔으며, 베네수엘라는 정국의 혼란 속에서 어떤 정권이 새로이 등장할지 세계의 관심사가 될 것 같다.
